PPI Is Only Half the Story

The Buying Rule to Use
For desk monitors, treat 220 PPI as a high-value sharpness target, not a hard human limit. Beyond it, look for a clear use case: closer viewing, professional text work, photo detail, pen input, or a compact portable screen.
For office productivity, prioritize 200–220+ PPI if text comfort matters. For professional creative work, go above 220 PPI when detail inspection is routine. For gaming, balance PPI with refresh rate, latency, and GPU performance. For portable displays, higher PPI is more noticeable because viewing distance is shorter.
So, can your eyes resolve more than 220 PPI at arm’s length? Sometimes. But for most monitor buyers, 220 PPI is already near the point where display quality shifts from more pixels to better contrast, motion, brightness, ergonomics, and reliability.
